Harry Potter lives in a universe where spells, wands, invisibility cloaks, and teleportation are part of everyday life. For the average muggle, like you and I, this world lies just out of reach. Or does it?
Quantum physicist Krister Shalm and magican Dan Trommater team up to show how similar the worlds of Harry Potter and quantum physics really are.
Using the power of Quantum Physics, it is possible to make a ruler that can measure things far more accurately than normally possible. My PhD involved using photons, the smallest particles of light, in order to make such a “quantum ruler”. I was able to get indvidual photons to cooperate with one another, leaving them entangled. These entangled photons have special properties that allow them to be used to accomplish things not ordinarily possible. Along with the help of some friends I danced out these ideas using Lindy Hop as part of the 2010 Dance Your PhD contest.
